Laurence Cheng

Laurence Cheng is responsible for managing and overseeing the investment activities of Capital Z Investment Partners. Prior to co-founding Capital Z in 1998, Mr. Cheng spent 23 years at Zurich Financial Services. During his tenure at The Zurich, Mr. Cheng had a wide range of responsibilities culminating in his appointment as Group Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and member of Zurich’s Corporate Executive Board. As the CIO of the Zurich Group, Mr. Cheng was responsible for overseeing the firm’s proprietary investment activities across all traditional asset classes. Prior to being appointed CIO, Mr. Cheng served as the President and CEO of Zurich Investment Management Ltd., where he was responsible for managing the Zurich’s institutional asset management business with $14 billion in third-party assets under management. Prior to that, Mr. Cheng was the CFO of the Centre RE Group from 1992-1996, during which time he was responsible for the finite risk property and casualty reinsurance firm’s proprietary investment portfolio. From 1988-1992, Mr. Cheng was the President and CEO of Zurich International and prior to that, Mr. Cheng was the CIO and Senior Vice President of Investments of Zurich Canada.
Currently, Mr. Cheng serves on the Board of Directors of: Capital Z Access Fund, Ltd.; Capital Z Asia Advisors, Ltd.; CDH China Holdings Management Company, Ltd.; Cevian Capital Limited; Channel Capital Group, Inc.; Finansa Capital, Ltd.; FORT Management, Inc.; Palmyra Capital Advisors LLC; Quattro Global Capital, LLC; Sanctum FI LLP; Seoul Z Capital Partners (Private) Limited; Shoreview Industries LLC; Trinity Hunt Management GP, LLC; The Wave Management Company, LLC. Previously, Mr. Cheng also served on the board of Scudder Kemper Investments.
Mr. Cheng received a B.S. from the University of Hong Kong, an M.S. from the University of Western Ontario, London and an M.B.A. from York University, Toronto. Mr. Cheng is a fellow of both the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
